This curriculum theme models an integrated approach to teaching. Works of art by artists with North Carolina connections from the NCMA's permanent collection (and two special exhibitions) serve as primary sources for studying and discussing themes in North Carolina history and culture. Object information, discussion questions and lesson plans for grades 4 and 8 suggest ways of using these works of art to explore North Carolina history and culture within different contexts—from the social studies classroom to the art studio to the museum gallery.

Eight primary works of art below illustrate thematic issues relevant to North Carolina history and culture. Topics include: North Carolina historical figures, mid-twentieth-century art and Black Mountain College, geographic regions, natural resources, African American artists and contemporary North Carolina art.
