Head of a Woman in the Guise of a Goddess, 1st Century
Copper alloy and silver H. 11-5/8 in. (29.5 cm.), W. 7-5/8 in. (19.4 cm.),D. 9-1/8 in. (23.2 cm.)
Purchased with funds from the North Carolina Art Society (Robert F.Phifer Bequest), the State of North Carolina, and various donors, by exchange, 1995 (95.6)

The handsome young woman bears a startling resemblance to many portraits of Livia Drusilla, wife of the emperor Augustus. The large, undecorated diadem worn by the woman is a mark of special distinction. Her youthful beauty and diadem may imply that she is intended to appear divine. Livia was deified as Diva Augusta by the emperor Claudius in 41. The face, hair, and clothing closely resemble those shown on a series of bronze coins minted about A.D. 22-23 during the reign of Tiberius, her son.
