Govert Flinck (Dutch, 1615-1660)

The Return of the Prodigal Son, about 1640
Oil on canvas, 52 1/2 x 67 in. (133.4 x 170.2 cm.)
Purchased with funds from the State of North Carolina, 52.9.41

Flinck, a pupil of Rembrandt in the mid-1630s, was inspired by his master's etching of 1636 for his interpretation of this subject. He also showed his continuing dependence on Rembrandt's earthy palette and broadly applied brushstrokes. Basing his interpretation on a parable of Jesus taken from the Gospel of St. Luke (15:11-32), Flinck recorded the moment of reconciliation and forgiveness between the father and his repentant son.
