The son of the great Flemish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder (about 1525-1569), Jan Brueghel was praised on both sides of the Alps for his painstaking manner of painting and for his use of jewel-like colors. These qualities are strongly evident here and are enhanced by the fact that the work is painted on copper. The composition incorporates Brueghel's interests in still life, landscape, and religious subjects. A close inspection of this bustling port scene reveals the haloed St. Paul at the far right being led to the ship that will take him to Rome to stand trial. Like the Master of the Female Half-Lengths, whose Flight into Egypt hangs nearby, Brueghel took advantage of the subject to paint an extensive landscape.
