Flemish

Jacob Jordaens (Flemish, 1593-1678)

Adoration of the Shepherds, 1657
Oil on canvas, 106 1/4 x 81 in. (270.0 x 205.7 cm.)
Gift of John Motley Morehead, 55.7.1

This large altarpiece from the second half of Jordaens' career is filled with elements which help to identify the painter as the "Flemish Bassano," a reference to the sixteenth-century northern Italian artist who specialized in painting rustic themes. The crowded composition includes not only the shepherds who followed the angels to the site of the Nativity, but also their families and farm animals. One of the most brilliantly painted passages in the entire work is, in fact, the goat standing at the lower left corner.
