French 1770-1900

Eugéne Boudin (French, 1824-1898)

Trouville, The Jetties, High Tide, 1876
Oil on canvas, 12 1/4 x 17 3/4 in. (31.1 x 45.1 cm.)
Gift of North Carolina National Bank, 67.12.1

Boudin was born in coastal Normandy where he developed a love for marine subjects. It was there that he met the young Claude Monet and encouraged him to paint outdoors. The two artists shared interests in the changing qualities of light and atmospheric conditions as well as in depicting the movement and reflections of water. Boudin's later paintings, such as this one, show the influence of the Impressionists in the freedom from detail, the use of bright color, and the unifying textural effects of vigorous brushwork.
