The North Carolina Museum of Art, Lawrence J. Wheeler, director, is an agency of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources and is governed by a 29-member board of trustees. Board members are appointed by the governor, the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Art Society, the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation and the Board of Trustees.

The North Carolina State Art Society is a board of directors that represents Museum members in the governance of the institution, serves as a statewide advocacy group and oversees the Robert F. Phifer Fund.

The North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation, Inc., overseen by a 28-member board of directors, solicits and manages private contributions, corporate and foundation gifts and grants in support of Museum programs and operations.
