About the Exhibition

This unique exhibition features selections from the collection of Etta and Claribel Cone, the wealthy and adventurous sisters who acquired a vast collection of modern art, Pablo Picasso, Woman with Bangs, 1902, oil on canvas, 24 1/8 x 20 1/4 in., The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Cone Collection © 2004 Estate of Pablo Picasso/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New Yorkincluding over 400 works by Matisse and over 100 by Picasso. The Cone’s fortune derived in part from textile mills in the Carolinas. Their collection was bequeathed to The Baltimore Museum of Art, where it now resides.

Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris: Masterpieces from The Baltimore Museum of Art explores the vibrant creativity of the artists who made Paris the center of modern art and culture from the late 19th century to the outbreak of the Second World War. The exhibition features 74 works selected from The Baltimore Museum of Art’s rich and extensive holdings.

Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris features 74 paintings, sculptures and drawings by such artists as Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, Bonnard, Monet, Signac, Rodin, Degas, Modigliani, Braque, Léger, Miró, Masson and Giacometti. Star billing is given to the two preeminent masters of French modernism, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, represented in the exhibition by 35 paintings, sculptures and drawings.

The exhibition also includes the film Michael Palin and the Ladies Who Loved Matisse, shown daily in the Video Theater.
